The Master of Computer Applications Course
(Applicable for students admitted from the academic year 2001-2002)
OMC 1.0 Title of the course
OMC 1.1 The Course shall be called Master of Computer Applications with an abbreviated form MCA.
OMC 2.0 Duration of the course
OMC 2.1 The MCA Course shall be of 3 years duration extended over six semesters.
OMC 2.2 A candidate shall be allowed a maximum duration of six years to become eligible for the award of MCA Degree, failing which he/she shall have to register once again as a fresh candidate.
OMC 3.0 Eligibility for admission
OMC 3.1 Admission is open to Master of Computer Application Course for all the candidates who have passed a Bachelor's Degree of minimum 3 years duration or any other examination recognized by this university as equivalent thereto. However he/she shall have studied Mathematics or Business Mathematics or Statistics or Business Statistics or Mathematics and Statistics or Computer Programming or Computer Science or Computer Applications as one of the subject either at degree level or at 10 + 2 level.
OMC 3.2 Admission to MCA Course shall be open for the candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with not less than 50% of marks in the aggregate of all the years of the degree examinations. However, in the case of candidate belonging to SC/ST and Group I, the aggregate percentage of marks in the qualifying examinations shall not be less than 45%.
OMC 3.3 There shall be an Entrance Examination for admission to the MCA Course. The candidates seeking admission in any of the Engineering Colleges affiliated to VTU shall have to take this Examination. There shall be an Admission Committee for MCA Course in each College consisting of the Principal of the College as Chairman, HOD and one senior staff member of the Department, as members and one Nominee of VTU as its member. The Admission Committee shall conduct the concerned
examination and shall also conduct the interview of the candidates. The Principals should approach the University for the Nominee of VTU.
OMC 3.4 The maximum number of seats shall be as per the sanctions of the AICTE, State Government and VTU.
OMC 3.5 The graduates other than the graduates of VTU and any of the Universities of Karnataka State, shall have to obtain Eligibility Certificate from the VTU to seek MCA admissions in any of the colleges affiliated to VTU.
OMC 3.6 The Calendar of events in respect of the course shall be fixed by the University from time to time.
OMC 4.0 Attendance requirement
OMC 4.1 Each semester of the course shall be treated as a separate unit for calculation of the attendance.
OMC 4.2 A candidate shall be considered to have satisfied the attendance requirement if he/she has attended not less than 75% of the classes in each subject of all the semesters (Theory, Laboratory, Seminars, Practical training and Dissertation work) actually conducted up to the end of the semester.
OMC 4.3 A candidate who does not satisfy the attendance requirement, mentioned as above, shall not be eligible to appear for the
examination of that semester and shall be required to repeat that semester along with regular students later.
OMC 4.4 If a candidate, for any reason, discontinues the course after the first/third semester he/she may be permitted to register for the second/fourth semester, after one year, with the immediate subsequent batch, subject to the condition that he/she shall complete the class work, laboratory work and seminar including the submission of dissertation within maximum stipulated period.
OMC 4.5 The Principals of the concerned Colleges shall display regularly the list of such candidates who fall short of attendance on the Notice Boards.
OMC 4.6 The list of the candidates falling short of attendance shall be sent to the University at least one week prior to the commencement of theory/practical examination, whichever is earlier.
OMC 5.0 Internal assessment
OMC 5.1 Each candidate shall obtain not less than 50% of the marks prescribed for the Internal assessment of each subject including seminars.
OMC 5.2 Internal assessment Marks shall be based on assignments/tests/oral examinations and seminars conducted in respective subjects.
OMC 5.3 The candidates obtaining less than 50% of the Internal Assessment marks in any subject shall not be eligible to appear for the examination in that subject. However, the Head of the Department may arrange for the improvement of Internal Assessment marks in the subject/subjects in the immediate subsequent two semesters and the candidate be provided an opportunity for taking the examination at the end of the immediate subsequent two semesters with prior permission of Registrar (Eval.) to fulfill the provisions of OMC 5.1. However, only one chance is given for improvement in Internal Assessment marks for each subject.
OMC 5.4 The students shall write the Internal assessment Test in Blue Books and this shall be maintained by the Principal for at least one month after the announcement of result for the verification by the University Officials.
OMC 5.5 The Internal assessment marks sheet shall bear the signatures of the concerned Teacher, Head of the Department and the Principal.
OMC 5.6 The Internal assessment marks list shall be displayed on the Notice Board and corrections, if any, shall be incorporated before sending to University.
OMC 5.7 No corrections of the Internal assessment marks shall be entertained after the submission of marks list to the University.
OMC 6.0 Paper setting and evaluation of theory examination
OMC 6.1 The Question papers in theory subjects shall be set by the
examiners appointed for the purpose by the University.
OMC 6.2 There shall be double valuation for theory papers in the University Examinations. The Answer papers shall be valued by two examiners appointed by the University.
OMC 6.3 If the difference between the marks awarded by the two
examiners, is not more than 20% of the marks, the marks awarded to the candidate shall be the average of two evaluations.
OMC 6.4 If the difference between the marks awarded by the two examiners is more than 15, the script shall be evaluated by a third examiner. The average of the marks of nearest two valuations shall be considered as the marks secured by the candidate. However, if one of the three marks falls exactly midway between the other two, then the higher two marks shall be taken for averaging.
OMC 7.0 Seminar
OMC 7.1 All candidates shall present seminars on the topics chosen from the latest relevant fields, as per the scheme of teaching and examinations.
OMC 7.2 The Head of the Department shall fix the responsibility of conducting seminars to one of the senior faculties in the Department.
OMC 7.3 The Internal assessment marks for the seminar shall be awarded by the person in charge of the seminar and the Head of the Department jointly.
OMC 8.0 Dissertation work
OMC 8.1 The topic and title of the dissertation shall be chosen by the candidate in consultation with the guide and co-guide, if any, during the fifth semester itself. However modification of the title is permitted at the time of final submission of dissertation report during the sixth semester. The subject and topic of the dissertation shall be from the major field of studies of the candidate.
OMC 8.2 The dissertation work shall be carried out by each candidate independently during the sixth semester under the guidance of one of the faculty members of the Department in the institution
of study. If the dissertation assignment is of inter-disciplinary nature, a co-guide shall be taken from the other concerned department.
OMC 8.3 If a dissertation has to be carried out in any industry/factory/organization, outside the campus, the permission to that effect and the name of co-guide at any of these organizations shall be intimated to the University at the beginning of sixth-semester by the Principal of the College.
OMC 8.4 At the end of sixth semester each candidate shall submit a report of the dissertation work duly approved by the guide, co-guide. The dissertation work shall be countersigned by the guide, co-guide(if any) and Head of the Department.
OMC 8.5 The candidate shall submit six copies of the dissertation work to the Head of the Institution. Duration of the dissertation work shall generally be 5 months. A separate calendar of events for submission of dissertation and viva-voce shall be fixed and will be notified by the
University in advance. The candidates who fail to submit the dissertation work within the stipulated time have to submit the same at the time of next ensuing examination.
OMC 8.6 Not withstanding anything above, the candidate has to complete the course within 6 academic years from the date of commencement of the course.
OMC 8.7 The dissertation shall be evaluated by two examiners - one internal and one external, appointed by the University. The evaluation of the dissertation shall be made independently by each examiner. During the evaluation of the dissertation if anyone of the examiner/both finds that the candidate is not getting the minimum marks for passing, he/they shall notify to the Principal/University stating specific reason for rejection and such reasons for
re-submission. The viva-voce examination of each candidates shall be conducted. The rejected dissertation may preferably send to the same examiners for the reexamination.
The candidate may also choose another topic of dissertation under a new guide, if necessary. In such a case, dissertation may be submitted within six years from the date of admission to the course. A different set of examiners shall be constituted for examination of dissertation under each circumstances by the
University.
OMC 8.8 A copy of the dissertation shall be sent to each of the examiners by the Head of the Institution. The dissertation of five students will be sent to one external examiner identified by the
University.
OMC 8.9 Both the examiners shall evaluate and send marks independently to Registrar (Evaluation).
OMC 8.10 Average of the marks awarded by the two
examiners shall be the final.
OMC8.11 Both the examiners shall evaluate the dissertation normally within a period of not more than 3 weeks from the date of receipt of the dissertation. The external examiner appointed by the
University, shall be contacted by the head of the institution to arrive at a convenient date for the conduct of viva-voce of the batch students allotted to the external-examiner.
OMC 8.12 The relative weightage for the evaluation of dissertation and the performance of the viva-voce shall be as per the scheme.
OMC 8.13 The viva-voce examination will be conducted jointly by the internal and external examiners and marks shall be awarded jointly. The marks shall be sent to the
University immediately after examination.
The candidate may also choose another topic of dissertation under a new guide, if necessary. In such case dissertation may be submitted within six years from the date of admission to the course. A different set of
examiners shall be constituted for evaluation of dissertation under such circumstances by the University.
The marks awarded by the examiners at the Viva-voce Examination shall be sent jointly to the University immediately after the examination.
OMC 9.0 Eligibility for passing
OMC 9.1 There shall be University examination at the end of each semester.
OMC 9.2 The candidate shall obtain a minimum of 40% of marks in the University Examination and a minimum of 50% of marks in aggregate in each subject including the Internal Assessment marks for pass in theory subject.
OMC 9.3 The candidate shall obtain a minimum of 40% of marks in each laboratory examination conducted by the
University with an aggregate of 50% of marks including Internal Assessment marks. A minimum of 50% of marks has to be obtained in seminar, dissertation (viva-voce) and dissertation (IA marks) separately.
OMC 9.4 There shall be no restriction for promotion from odd semester to even semester provided he/she has fulfilled the attendance requirements as per OMC 4.2.
OMC 9.5 A Candidate shall be eligible for
promotion from even semester to odd semester if he/she has not failed in more than four subjects of passing of the immediately preceding two semesters put together and has passed all lower semester examinations.
OMC 9.6 If a candidate so desires there shall be provisions for rejections of his/her results, and rejection of performance of all subjects of the particular semester examination, is only permitted once during the entire course of six semesters.
OMC 9.7 Applications for rejection shall be submitted to the Registrar (Evaluation) of the
University, through the Principal of the college, within thirty days from the date of announcement of results.
OMC 9.8 A candidate who opts for rejection is eligible for the award of class and distinction, but is not eligible for the award of ranks.
OMC 9.10 The result of final semester (dissertation) cannot be rejected.
OMC 10.0 Award of class
OMC 10.1 The candidates who have passed in all the subjects of first to five semesters and the dissertation work of sixth semester shall be declared to have passed the course.
OMC 10.2 The class shall be awarded on the aggregate marks of all the six semesters taken together.
OMC 10.3 A candidate who secures 70% and above marks in aggregate in first attempt shall be declared to have passed in first class with distinction.
OMC 10.4 A candidate who secures 60% or more marks but less than 70% in aggregate in first attempt shall be declared to have passed in first class.
OMC 10.5 A candidate, who secures 50% or more marks but less than 60% in aggregate shall be declared to have passed in second class.
OMC 10.6 There shall be three ranks. The ranks shall be declared on the basis of the aggregate marks of first to sixth semesters taken together and provided the candidate has passed in all these six semesters in first attempt only.
OMC 1 0.7 The ranks shall be awarded, if
a minimum of 10 candidates of the same batch, have appeared for the examination.
