The Master of Science in Engineering By Research
(With effect from 13.02.2002)

OMS 1.0 Title of the course

OMS 1.1 The Course shall be called Master of Science in Engineering by Research abbreviated as M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research

OMS 2.0 Duration of the course

OMS 2.1 The duration of the course shall be minimum of 2 years and maximum of 5 years from the date of registration.

OMS 2.2 The calendar of events in respect of the course shall be fixed by the University from time to time.

OMS 2.3 The course shall consist two parts -

Part I - Course Work

Part II - Dissertation

OMS 3.0 Eligibility for admission

Admission to  M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research Course is open to candidates who satisfy the following - 

OMS 3.1 Candidate who have passed B.E./B.Tech. examination of VTU or BE/B.Tech of any other recognized University, as equivalent thereto or any other examination recognized by this University as equivalent thereto and have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with not less than 60% of the marks in the aggregate, in the examinations of the semesters considered for the declaration of class/grade. However, a relaxation to the extent of 10% is allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST and any other category as notified by Government of Karnataka from time to time.

OMS 3.2 a) Teaching/Research Staff/Teaching Assistants, working in any Engineering College and Polytechnic Institutions recognized by AICTE either in the State of Karnataka or outside who have put in a minimum of one year of teaching experience in engineering colleges and they are sponsored by the respective Institutions/ DTE. Or

b) Members working in the State Government/Central Government/ Quasi Government Organizations/Public Sector Industries/Reputed Private Industries provided they have put in a minimum of one year of working experience and are sponsored by the concerned Organizations. Or

c) Awardees of research fellowship by nationally recognized bodies like CSIR etc., provided they have put in a minimum of one year of working experience.

OMS 4.0 Registration

OMS 4.1 The candidate shall submit his/her application for registration to the University in the prescribed format along with other necessary documents viz. degree certificate, marks cards of all examinations employers certificate and no objection certificate from the employer, consent of the guide, through the Head of the Institution where the candidate wants to do research.

OMS 4.2 All the time of registration of candidate shall indicate the field of research and branch of Engineering. The candidate can register in only such branch of Engineering for which the department is recognized as a research center by VTU.

OMS 4.3 Applications for registration to M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research will be called for by the University twice in a calendar year in July and January by notification. These will be placed before the Ph.D/M.Sc.(Engg.) by Research Registration Committee. Based on the performance of the candidates in the entrance examination, merit of the qualifying examination and performance in the interview, recommendations shall be made for registration to the University concerned.

OMS 4.4 The candidate so registered shall complete Part-I at the institution where he has registered.

OMS 4.5 No Guide shall have more than five candidates for M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research and Ph.D put together of VTU or any other University.

OMS 4.6 The guide shall prescribe six courses of study (Part I) relating to the area of research concerned. These subjects shall normally be selected from among the list of subjects already approved for M.Sc., Research by the concerned BOS of the University. However, if the guide recommends a new subject of study, he shall have to send the detailed syllabus of the subjects for approval by the concerned B.O.S.

OMS 4.7 In case of the guide is not available for a period of more than six months (going abroad, ill health, retirement) the candidate can choose a new guide after obtaining consent of the previous guide, proposed guide and the University.

OMS 5.0 Part-I : Course Work

OMS 5.1 All candidates whose registrations have been approved, shall submit the application for the examination in the subjects of course work (Part - I) in response to the notification issued by the University in this respect along with the prescribed fees and with a certificate from the guide for having completed the course work.

The written examinations for the subjects of the course work (Part-I) shall be arranged to be conducted normally along with the M.Tech. examinations of VTU.

OMS 5.2 The candidates are permitted to apply and appear for one or more subjects at a time in a given examination.

OMS 5.3 If the subject is that of an ongoing M.Tech. programme, the same question paper set to M.Tech. course has to be answered by the candidate.

However, if the subject is new, the question paper shall be set jointly by the examiners appointed for the purpose by the University from the panel recommended by the concerned Board of Studies, with the guide being one of the members of the panel of examiners.

OMS 5.4 The answer papers shall be valued by two examiners preferably those who have set the question paper/s.

OMS 5.5 If the difference between the marks awarded by the two examiners is not more than 15% of the maximum marks, the marks awarded to the candidate shall be the average of two evaluations.

OMS 5.6 If the difference between the marks awarded by the two examiners is more than 15% of the maximum marks, the answer script shall be evaluated by the third examiner appointed by the University. Average of the nearest two marks out of the three shall be taken as marks secured by the student.

OMS 5.7 The candidate shall obtain a minimum of 50% of the maximum marks for a pass in each subject.

OMS 5.8 A candidate can take a maximum of two attempts to pass in a subject of Part-I. However, the course of Part-I shall be completed before his submission of thesis.

OMS 6 Part-II - Dissertation work

OMS 6.1 The candidate shall submit six copies of synopsis of the dissertation work to the Head of the Institution at least two months before the submission of the dissertation of the Research Work. The Head of the Institution shall arrange to send five copies of the synopsis to the Registrar (Evaluation) VTU.

OMS 6.2 The copy of the synopsis shall be sent to the Chairman, Board of Studies. Chairman, Board of Studies, in consultation with the guide, shall submit a panel of four names of experts to the University to act as external referees for valuation of dissertation. Among the four names, at least two shall be from other Universities/Institutions.

OMS 6.3 The candidate shall submit six copies of the dissertation along with a soft copy to the Head of the Institution, after a minimum period of two years and not later than five years from the date of registration. The Head of Institution shall make arrangements to send five of these hard copies to the University for evaluation.

OMS 6.4 The date of submission of the dissertation may be extended by a maximum period of one year after five years, with the prior approval of the University.

OMS 6.5 The dissertation shall be evaluated by three examiners appointed by the University - the guide and two external examiners of which one shall be from other University Institution. The evaluation of the dissertation shall be made independently by each examiner.

OMS 6.6 The copy of the dissertation shall be sent to each examiners by the University for evaluation.

OMS 6.7 All the examiners shall evaluate and send report independently to the Registrar (Evaluation).

OMS 6.8 All the examiners shall evaluate the dissertation normally within a period of not more than one month from the date of receipt of the dissertation. One of the external examiners who shall be appointed by the University, shall be contacted by the guide to arrive at a mutually convenient date for the conduct of Viva-Voce of the concerned candidate and the same shall be intimated to the University. For Viva-Voce, the candidate shall present the dissertation for defence.

OMS 6.9 The dissertation shall not be accepted for awarding the degree if any one of the external finds that the dissertation work is not up to the expected standard. The examiner shall give reasons for the same and make suggestions for improvement of the dissertation for re-submission. After incorporating the suggestions, the dissertation report shall be sent to the same examiner. If the examiner does not approve the dissertation for the second time also, it should be sent to a third examiner appointed by the University. If the third examiner also does not approve the dissertation, it is open for the candidate to register afresh with the University.

OMS 6.10 After successful completion of Part-I and Part-II the candidate shall be awarded the degree of M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research in the concerned branch by the University.
