Facilities:
Laboratories for under-graduate course such as Basic Material Testing Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Laboratory, Survey Laboratory, Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, Concrete, Highway and Building Materials Testing Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Laboratory and Geology Laboratory are fully equipped with modern equipments. In addition there is a model section having models of various Civil Engineering Structures and Building components. Some of the major items installed are equipment for non-destructive testing of concrete-PUNDIT (Ultrosonic, non-destructive testing). Profometer, Schmidt Hammer, concrete core cutter, Rock-cutting saw for testing samples from buildings, etc. A microprocessor controlled 110 tonne capacity Universal Testing Machine with stress and strain control facilities for testing of very high strength and large sized structural material is also been kept. The Structural Engineering Laboratory is equipped with loading frames, prestressing jacks, photo-elastic bench etc., Fluid Mechanics Laboratory has a Mini testing flume and Electronic analogy apparatus for flow nets. Highway Laboratory has Marshall stability testing apparatus, Ductility testing machine for Bitumen and Viscometers. Survey Laboratory is having an advanced Total Station and Electronic Digital Area-line meter with interface. Geo-Technical Engineering laboratory has Electronic sensitive Digital Balances and insitu sampling kit.

Earthquake engineering laboratory was established in 2000 from the research grant received from AICTE under R & D scheme of "Model Studies in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering" .

The following are the major equipments procured:

•  Transparent box and shaking table model

•  Accelerometers and pore pressure sensors

•  Large size ovens - 2 Nos.

•  Data acquisition system

The research work comprises of study of behaviour of embankments, sloping ground, structure on ground under seismic loading and to propose methods, of mitigation against earthquake loading.

In the year 2000 AICTE had sanctioned a TAPTEC project on Computer Aided Design Laboratory . Under this scheme more facilities were added to the Computer Laboratory of the department.

In the year 2003, AICTE has sanctioned a MODROBS in Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory Project. Under this scheme, some facilities incorporating latest techniques are being added to the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of the department.

The department undertakes consultancies in the area of Geo-Technical Engineering, Materials testing, Survey, Design of Structure and Building construction, non-destructive testing of building etc. The work on low cost school buildings using soil-cement bricks and low cost housing for the Zilla Parishad, Mysore has been appreciated by many organizations. The Department was entrusted with proof checking of multistoried building design and stadium designs for National Games constructions at Bangalore and Mysore. The Department has been entrusted with the restoration of Lansdown building, which is an old monumental building in Mysore city by the Mysore city corporation.

Continuing Education Programmes are being regularly conducted for officials of Karnataka PWD & Irrigation Departments in the areas of concrete testing, Mix Design, Restoration of concrete structures, RC Detailing, Reinforced soil structures, Office Automation, Computer Applications in Civil Engineering etc.

Civil Engineering Association of the department is very active in organizing technical lectures, field visits and extra-curricular activities to the students of the department.
