Research:
Research has been the major forte of the department. The staffs of the department are actively engaged in research ever since 1986. Highlights of our research activities are:

• Over 200 research papers in reputed national / international journals / conferences
• Fourteen (14) candidates have successfully completed their Ph.D program
• Five (5) active researchers are currently guiding another fourteen (14) students in their quest for Ph.D
• Completion of joint research projects sponsored by national / international organization
  • Indo-French research project on 'Symbolic Clustering of Satellite Data for Forest Inventory
  • Indo-Kazakh research project on 'Fast Auto Configuring Neural Networks for Data Mining'
  • 'Dimensionality reduction and color composite imaging sponsored by DRDO, New Delhi
• Two laboratories in the area of Image processing and Multimedia computing exclusively for research
• Pioneering research in the area of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence since last 15 years
• Current research interests span areas like:

  Genetic Algorithms
  Social Computing

Consultancy is another major thrust area of the department. Our staff members have been providing consultancy services to various National / International organizations. Some of the notable ones are:

• WHO project in Bangladesh
• Software development for World Bank assisted project on Rural Water Supply and Sanitation
• Common Entrance Test (CET) data processing for Govt. of Karnataka
• Result processing system for polytechnics in Karnataka
• Consultancy services for training project assisted by World Bank
• On-site consultancy services to organizations in UK and USA.

The department has conducted ISTE, AICTE and other sponsored short-term courses, National seminars and symposia. The department is also actively involved in distance education programs:

• Study center for BCA and MCA courses offered by IGNOU since the last five years
• Syllabus formulation, Course material preparation, Paper setting and evaluation for BSc (IT) and MSc (IT) courses offered by KSOU

The computer center of the department serves as a central facility for the entire college. The department also has a computer hardware laboratory to train its students. The Computer center has a good collection of hardware / software and provides the needed infrastructure for teaching and research. The laboratory facilities and the Internet access are available round the clock to the staff and students of the college.
