Mission of the Department:
To provide a superior learning experience focused on the basic and future educational needs of society in Polymer Technology by offering a high quality student centered undergraduate education that is relevant to the future careers and lives of our students.

Objectives:
•  To develop a model under graduate and post graduate centre
•  Imparting quality education
•  Creating and up-dating research facilities
•  Creating industry institute - interaction activity and inviting industry based     projects
•  Creation of placement opportunities
•  To strengthen alumni association and creating link between old and new students
•  Conducting short and long-term courses for industrial/ academic executives.

Facilities:
The academic programmes are designed to cover the areas of plastics, rubbers and composites. Since this branch is interdisciplinary in nature, the department draws its support from experts from industries, Research Labs and IITs. Thus, the courses are aimed at training suitable, skilled, engineering personnel for industries and entrepreneurship development. The Department also acts as the head quarters for the Indian Rubber Institute (IRI), Karnataka branch and Indian Plastic Institute (I PI), Mysore Chapter.

The Polymer Science and Technology Department has well equipped laboratories. The processing laboratory is equipped with injection and blow moulding machines, single screw extruders with pipe, strand and film extrusion attachments, mixing mill, hydraulic press, pilot plant for resin production, etc. Besides this, other laboratories such as physical and organic chemistry labs, polymer synthesis, polymer characterization, polymer testing, polymer composite, rubber processing and chemical engineering laboratories are well equipped. Sophisticated testing and characterization equipments like Universal Testing Machine (UTM), Thermal Analyzer, Brooks field Viscometer, etc. are also available. The Department has recently created excellent Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) laboratory with generous funding from AICTE. Softwares such as MOLD FLOW (Modules - Flow, cool, midplane and MOL) Pro-E, Mechanical Desktop are available for teaching, research and consultancy purposes.

Activities:
The department is actively engaged in Research and Development activities as well as in testing and consultancy services. The faculty members have successfully completed many AICTE and DST sponsored research projects. On an average 4-5 papers are published in reputed journals every year by this department. Participation and organization of seminars, workshops, short-term courses, expert lectures are regularly done. This brings in a lot of expertise and experience for the benefit of students and also helps in training them for the needs of the industry.

The faculties of this department have been kept abreast of recent research in this area. Dr. G.M.Shashidara and Dr. Siddaramaiah were awarded DST - SERC Fellowships during 1998 and 1999 respectively and under this scheme, they worked at NCL Pune and CLRI Chennai respectively.

Dr. Siddaramaiah is the recipient of "Young Scientist" - 1997 award in "Chemical Science" from KAAS, Bangalore, "Sir C.V.Raman Award" for the year 1998-99 in the discipline of 'Chemical Technology, from KSCST, Bangalore, Government of Karnataka. "Conference Excellence Award" at International Conference in Plastic Waste Management and Environment" from SIIR, Delhi, and "Honorary membership from "New York Academy of Science", USA. He has to his credit more than 50 research papers published in National and International Journals and about 50-research papers presented in National and International Conferences.

Several developmental work referred by industries namely BEML, Wipro Peripherals, Vikrant Tyres Ltd., Mysore and Maxpharma, Nanjangud have been successfully executed. One of the research finding related to development of Butyl rubber compound used for making tyre-curing bladders has been applied for Indian patent (Provisional specification applied on 29.9.1999, Final specification filed on 29.9.2002).

The students have fabricated a Thermoforming machine and automatic dart impact tester for films with the financial assistance by KSCST. The Hospital Plastic Waste Management Studies taken up by a group of students was also sponsored by KSCST and this has opened up a new avenue to interact with community medicine departments of several medical colleges. Two projects sponsored by KSCST were awarded the best project of the year 1999. Recently a group of students worked on KSCST sponsored project on "Controlled Drug Delivery" in collaboration with JSS Pharmacy College, Mysore.

Achievements:
Faculty members have received many National / International awards / fellowships such as DST-SERC "Fellowships and Commonwealth - fellowships". Prestigious Commonwealth fellowship was awarded to Dr.G.M.Shashidara. Under this fellowship, he worked as visiting professor in school of Metallurgy and Materials,    University of Birmingham during the period (28.10.2002 - 28.04.2003)

•  AICTE has sponsored Rs.12 lakh for modernization of CAD facilities in the year     2002 - 2003.
1. CAD Software available: Mold flow (Flow, cool, midplane & MDL) Mechanical     desktop and Pro-E (on Network from IP Dept.)
2. A well-designed CAD Lab with a seating capacity of 20 was created under this     project
3. KSCST has sponsored Rs.18, 500/- towards student projects in the year     2002- 2003
4.  Department has been accredited by NBA with "A" grade for 5 years (2003-2008)
5. A short-term course on "Recent Trends in Material Science & Mathematical     Modeling" sponsored by AICTE was organized by this Dept. during July 29th to     Aug 9th 2003
6. The department has achieved excellence in academic and research right from the     inception
7. The department is having excellent rapport with alumni, industries, National     research labs, IIT's and universities
8. The department is providing consultancy service to polymer-based industries
9. Achieved a good placement record (> 70% employed)
10.Even though it is young, more than  one crore rupees R&D projects were successfully completed by the faculties and produced 5 Ph.D and 5 master students.
